What is muffin tins or muffin pans?

A type of pan used for baking muffins. The pan typically will have 6 or 12 individual round pockets or holders connected to the tin and formed in the shape of a muffin. The muffin batter is poured into the individual pockets and as the muffin bakes, a top forms over the pocket while the base of the muffin is baked in the shape of the cup. Muffin tins are commonly available in 3 sizes ranging from those that bake a small or miniature muffin that is 1 to 2 inches in diameter up to tins that hold large muffins approximately 4 inches in diameter. Muffin tins may also be referred to as muffin pans, cupcake tins, muffin trays.

Muffin tins can be made out of aluminum, stainless steel, carbon steel, or silicone. In addition, aluminum, carbon steel, and stainless steel muffin tins may be coated with Teflon or other non-stick coatings.

Types of muffin tins

    • Mini muffin tin

    A single cup within a mini muffin tin is between 1/8 and 1/4 cup or 30 to 60ml(1 to 2 oz), and because these are less common, there are several standard numbers of cups per tin, including 24, 48 cups per tin. Mini baking cups with a 1″ diameter can be used for presenting chocolate covered cherries or caramels.

    Standard muffin tin

    Standard muffin tins will make 12 cups muffins, with each cup in them holding between 1/3 and 1/2 cup (2.5 to 4 oz / 75 ml to 125 ml) of batter each. Typically, standard baking cups measure 2″ x 1 1/4″ and are commonly used for traditional-sized cupcakes or muffins.

    • Large muffin tin

    A jumbo muffin pan is exactly what it sounds like: a big sister to the standard tin, making 6 oversized muffins instead of 12 regular ones. Each cup in a jumbo pan is roughly 2½ times the size of a basic muffin cup, which makes the tool significantly more flexible and versatile.     Baking hard-boiled and soft-boiled eggs in a 12-cup muffin tin couldn’t be more simple. The secret is in how long you allow them to cook. Normally hard-boiled eggs need to bake 20 minutes, soft-boiled eggs need to bake 10 minutes. For more details, you can check here.

    Bake the brownies for approximately 20 minutes. To check for doneness, stick a toothpick into the center of one of the brownies, and then pull it straight out. If it is covered in wet dough, the brownies are not yet done. If it is completely clean, you have overbaked your brownies and should remove them from the oven immediately. Ideally, the toothpick should be mostly clean with a few moist crumbs.

    Bake eggs at 350ºF for 10-15 minutes or until the yolk reaches your desired doneness.

    1. Dissolve baking soda in warm water while preheating the oven.
    2. Pour the water and baking soda mixture into each muffin hole.
    3. Bake the muffin pan for 8 to 20 minutes.
    4. Remove the pan from the oven. 
    5. Scrub the muffin pan with warm water and dish soap.
